Devil’s Night Book 3

Focuses on Winter Ashby & Damon Torrance

QUICK REVIEW

Dark, funny and unexpectedly emotional. Loved it.

I went into this book hating the MMC, I really didn’t think I could ever like Damon, but here I am, forgiving him for all of the stuff he pulled. I think what’s so great about this book is the constant back and forth you feel. You want to hate him so badly, but just like Winter, there’s just something that always pulls you back.

Writing & Plot

Once again, fantastic pacing. Penelope Douglas is truly incredible at keeping the reader fully engaged on every single page.

Her move between past and present is flawless as always. At no point does the flow feel clunky, it just makes you want to keep reading, keep turning that page because you just have to know what’s going to happen next.

But, what I loved most about this book in particular was how Penelope wrote Winter’s perspective. I could really feel the surroundings rather than just see them which is a testament to her talent.

Characters

I genuinely started this book hating Damon. In the previous two books, I really didn’t like him and I was struggling to think of ways he could be redeemed in his book, but here we are. All redeemed.

Another great thing about Kill Switch was seeing Rika really come out of her shell. She is definitely no longer hiding behind Michael and it was great to see. Finding out she and Damon are siblings…it shouldn’t make any sense but it so does.

So back to Damon…Damon’s past is just heartbreakingly awful, but that still didn’t make everything he did ok for me. He almost killed Will. His best friend. He was just awful to Rika for like, no reason and I really hated the way he treated Banks. You just don’t treat anyone like that, let alone a vulnerable sibling. He hated his father, yet always acted just like him? Safe to say, Damon confused the hell out of me.

The more I read, and the more we got inside Damon’s head and found out why he did the things he did, and saw situations (like the boat) from his perspective, my opinion of him really started to change.

I did have moments where I was like ok Damon fine, but then was straight back to WTH Damon come on! I think that actually made me enjoy the read more!

I’m trying to avoid too many spoilers, so all I will say is that he has a lot of stuff to make up for and a lot of trust to earn back, but so far he’s not doing too badly. When he’s finally honest, not only with the others but with himself, when he lets go and lets himself feel and be vulnerable… What can I say? I like Damon now haha!

Winter is a great character. Penelope did a great job with Winter’s blindness. It really added to the story and made Winter a stronger character. I loved her development. She started off already a pretty strong FMC in my opinion, but still needed a push to stand up for herself more. Damon certainly gave her this push.

Another thing I loved was exploring Will and Damon’s friendship. The dynamic between those two is complex and the tension is undeniable. While Winter is the love of Damon’s life, I think Will is his soulmate, his person, you know?

Oh and one more thing… Dancing on the table. Will Grayson. My Prerogative. Now one of my favourite songs.

Another great read.
