Nightfall - Book Review
5 stars | 5 spice
Devils Night Series Book 4
Focus on Emory Scott & Will Grayson III
QUICK REVIEW
Dark, mysterious, and emotional, with a touch of dark humour.
Twists and turns every left and right! I was constantly on the edge of my seat! One thing I love so much about Penelope’s writing is how organic it feels. I never truly know what’s coming, but once something comes everything fits so perfectly.

Writing & Plot
This may sound odd, but let me explain. I loved the confusion with this one. I had no idea what was going on in the best way. The mystery aspect of this book was fantastic. I just had to know, I had to keep reading because I needed to know what the meaning of everything was. What is Blackchurch exactly? Who put them there? Why are there never any girls? What is Aydin's deal, and why do I sorta like this guy...?
As always, the pacing and the flow between past and present was great.
I really enjoyed the dynamic between Will and Emory, I think the complexity of their feelings is so well written.
The dialogue feels real and the world feels tangible.
Characters
Will, Will, Will. I love Will Grayson III. As an adult. I say this because while Will as a teenager is a hilarious goofball, I think his more sheltered upbringing (compared to the others) made him a little naive at times and caused him to look only at the surface level a lot of times.
If he would’ve just looked a little deeper when he and Emmy were teenagers, maybe he would’ve understood more why she was pushing him away; it wasn’t because she thought she was better than him, she thought that she wasn’t good enough for him.
Everything Will went through, leaving his comfort zone and friends and going to college, then going to Prison, while yeah, that was shit for him, actually think that all made him a better person; and a better character. But maybe I like more of an edge hahaha.
At first, he held onto all that anger from the past to protect himself from more heartbreak, but once (and I say this with love) got over himself, he finally started to understand Emmy and her situation more.
Onto Emmy. Wow did she go through some deep shit. She survived and kept on surviving. I get why she shut herself off from people. She didn’t want to bring others down, she didn’t want anyone to have to share even half the pain she had inside her. While I do think she should’ve come forward after the boys got out of prison, I also get why she didn’t. She wanted to hold onto those few good memories from back in the day, scared that when she came forward about everything, they would be lost, tainted.
I struggled for a while because I felt so sorry for Alex. I love Alex, she is such a great character, but Will and Emmy... They're just so right for each other. And WIll was right, he needs Emmy, she doesn't let him fall into his addictions or self destructive behaviour. Emmy calls him on his shit, while Alex let him revel in it (and that was not alway what was best for him). Besides, I really her and Aydin together. I know we didn't get many scenes of the two of them, but I feel like we know them both separately enough to see they're right for each other.
Blackchurch. I mean, what a ride! Man, that was awesome! I loved all the scenes there! The snake pit? I mean, WOW! I will never forget that scene. I had literal chills the entire time. I truly felt like I was present in that moment; it was insane in the best way.
I think Nightfall was the perfect wrap up to the main series. Seeing all the plot points come together was awesome and seeing a bright light of hope for each of the characters start to come through was heartwarming.
The Series Overall
This whole series surprised me. I loved the darkness, the taboo topics it addressed, the humour was right up my street (nice and dark hahaha), and the characters had me screaming at the page when I was noted with them and doing happy dance when something finally good happened for them (although, that took longer for Damon lol).
Overall, amazing. If you want dark romance, humour, characters who you will want to become best friends with and a rollercoaster of a ride READ THIS SERIES!
And yes…I don’t know how this happened…and he solidified in Nightfall…but... Damon is my favourite. There I said it! The unredeemable has been redeemed.
